Tokkelroom
Tokkelroom is a thick, sweet egg drink that closely resembles advocaat but contains less alcohol. You don't just drink it; you also eat it with a spoon. Here you'll learn what tokkelroom is, how it differs from advocaat and how to serve it.
Advocaat, but lighter
Tokkelroom is an egg drink: a thick, yellow drink made with eggs, sugar and alcohol. In terms of taste and thickness, it closely resembles advocaat. The major difference is the amount of alcohol. Tokkelroom has 8%; advocaat has at least 14%.
That difference also explains the name. An egg liqueur may only be called advocaat if it contains at least 14% alcohol. At 8%, tokkelroom falls below that threshold, which is why it was given its own name. Its lower alcohol content makes tokkelroom taste smoother, somewhat sweeter and creamier. Like advocaat, it is often eaten with a spoon, topped with a dollop of whipped cream.
