What is the difference between a flat and a toothed head?
A toothed head grips lime wedges and sugar cubes and works well on firm ingredients. A flat head presses rather than tears, which makes it better for mint, because mint releases bitterness the moment the leaf breaks.
Can a wooden muddler go in the dishwasher?
No. Wood absorbs water, swells as a result and then cracks along the grain. Wash a wooden muddler by hand in lukewarm water straight after use and let it dry standing upright so the moisture can run out.
How hard should you muddle for a mojito?
Gently. Press the mint against the bottom two to four times with a quarter turn and leave the leaves intact. As soon as you grind the mint, bitterness is released from the leaf veins, and it lingers for the rest of the glass.
Which muddler length do I need?
For a low tumbler, 25 centimetres is enough. If you work in a tall highball glass, go for 26.5 centimetres, because otherwise your knuckles hit the rim of the glass just as you try to apply pressure.
