How many cl should a gin and tonic glass be?
At least 50 cl, and 65 to 80 cl is more comfortable. A gin and tonic is about five centilitres of gin, twice as much tonic and plenty of ice. With too little room you have to choose between ice and tonic.
What exactly is a copa glass?
A copa is a balloon-shaped bowl on a stem, originally from Spain. The wide belly gives ice and garnish room, and the slightly tapered rim holds the scent of juniper and botanicals above the drink.
Why ice first and only then tonic?
The ice chills the glass and the gin, so the tonic loses less of its fizz as you pour. Pour the tonic down the side of the glass or over a bar spoon and then stir half a turn at most.
Can I serve a gin and tonic in a long drink glass?
You certainly can, and plenty of bars do. You do lose part of the aroma, because a narrow glass lets the scent escape past your nose instead of holding it in the bowl.
Are gin and tonic glasses with a long stem fragile?
Slightly more fragile than models with a short, thick stem. For the trade a short stem is more practical, certainly on a tray. Place them apart when washing, because toppling bowls are the biggest source of breakage.
