What is the difference between a snifter and a tulip glass?
A snifter is bulbous with a narrow rim, so the aromas concentrate and you mainly smell the sweet top layer. A tulip glass is slimmer and slightly more open, lets the alcohol vapour escape faster and therefore shows more detail with older cognac.
How much cognac do you pour into a cognac glass?
Three to four centilitres is the usual amount, whatever the size of the glass. In a 70 cl balloon that is a thin layer on the bottom. The rest of the glass is there to capture the vapour.
Should you warm a cognac glass before use?
No. Warming it over a flame is a habit from the sixties and is hardly ever done in France any more, because it mainly pushes the alcohol forward. The warmth of your hand around the bowl is quite enough.
Are cognac glasses dishwasher safe?
The tempered crystal glasses from Schott Zwiesel and Zwiesel Glas and the toughened glass from Arcoroc go in the machine without any trouble. Set large balloons at an angle between the prongs so the rim does not knock against anything, because that is where most damage occurs.
