What is Tomintoul?

The smooth whisky from Speyside

Tomintoul is a single malt Scotch whisky from Speyside. The distillery was built in the 1960s in the valley of the Avon, in the Glenlivet area, and is named after the nearby village of Tomintoul, one of the highest-altitude villages in the Scottish Highlands. It has been owned by Angus Dundee Distillers since 2000.

Tomintoul calls its whisky "the gentle dram": the gentle drink. The house style is light, fruity and mild, without sharp edges and with little or no smoke. The whisky is mainly matured in ex-bourbon casks. In addition, master distiller Robert Fleming works with many finishes, from oloroso and PX sherry to port, cognac and red wine. This means there is a bottle of Tomintoul for almost every taste.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Tomintoul

Tomintoul is smooth enough to drink neat, even for those who are not yet very familiar with whisky. A few drops of water or an ice cube work too.

Neat

Pour 30 ml into a tulip-shaped tasting glass and let it rest for a moment. A drop of water brings out the fruit.

Glass: tasting glass →

On the rocks

A large ice cube in a tumbler with the 10 Years. Fresh and mild, while retaining the fruit.

Glass: tumbler →

Cask series tasting

Pour a few varieties from the Cask series side by side, such as Tawny Port, Cognac and Pinot Noir. This lets you taste exactly what a cask does.

The right glass for Tomintoul

A tulip-shaped tasting glass brings out Tomintoul's soft fruitiness and is ideal for a tasting. For ice, choose a heavy tumbler. These are the glasses we recommend ourselves.

How do you pronounce Tomintoul?
Approximately like 'tom-in-TAUL', with the stress on the final syllable.

That is the brand's slogan. Tomintoul makes a mild, light whisky without harsh edges and with little or no smoke. Dram is the Scottish word for a small glass of whisky.
Is Tomintoul suitable for beginners?
Yes. Thanks to its soft, fruity style, Tomintoul is a good first single malt. Start with the 10 Years, neat or with an ice cube.
What is the Tomintoul Cask series?
A series of small batches in which Tomintoul, after maturing in bourbon casks, receives a further finish in casks that previously held tawny port, white port, PX sherry, cognac, merlot and pinot noir, among others. All variants are 40% ABV and are fun to taste side by side.
Which glass do you use for Tomintoul?
A tulip-shaped tasting glass for drinking neat and for tastings. For ice or a cocktail, choose a heavy tumbler.
