What is Chivas Regal?

A blend with Strathisla at its heart

Chivas Regal is a blended Scotch whisky from Chivas Brothers, which began as a grocery shop in Aberdeen in 1801. The brothers James and John Chivas blended whiskies for their customers and supplied Queen Victoria. In 1909, the first Chivas Regal came onto the market, a 25-year-old blend for the American market. The 12 Years followed in 1939 and became the best known.

At the heart of every Chivas Regal is Strathisla, the oldest still-operating distillery in the Highlands, in Keith in Speyside. Around it come dozens of malt and grain whiskies. The result is smooth, rounded and fruity: honey, apple and vanilla. Chivas Regal is part of Pernod Ricard and is one of the best-selling Scotch whiskies in the world.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Chivas Regal

Chivas is a blend that can do it all: neat, on the rocks or in a simple highball. The older bottles deserve a tasting glass and no ice.

On the rocks

Pour 50 ml Chivas 12 into a tumbler over one large ice cube. The ice softens and opens up the whisky without diluting it too quickly. The classic way.

Glass: tumbler →

Chivas highball

50 ml Chivas with 150 ml soda water or ginger ale in a long drink glass filled with ice, with an orange zest. Light, refreshing and the way Chivas is enjoyed in Asia.

Highball recipe →

Neat, in a tasting glass

For the XV, 18 or 25: 30 ml in a tulip-shaped tasting glass at room temperature, without ice. Swirl, smell and take small sips. A drop of water is fine.

What percentage of alcohol is in Chivas Regal?
All regular Chivas Regals, from the 12 Years to the 25 Years, contain 40% alcohol. The XV, Extra 13 and Mizunara are also 40%.
What does 12 Years mean on Chivas Regal?
That the youngest whisky in the blend has been aged in a cask for at least twelve years. A blend contains dozens of whiskies, so some are older. With the 18 Years, the youngest component is eighteen years old, and so on.
What is the difference between Chivas Regal 12 and 18?
The 18 is richer, sweeter and more complex, with dried fruit, chocolate and a longer finish, and contains older whiskies. The 12 is lighter and fruitier, with honey and apple, and is intended for serving on the rocks and in cocktails. In terms of price, the difference is usually a factor of two to three.
Is Chivas Regal a single malt?
No, it is a blended Scotch: a mix of malt whiskies and grain whisky from different distilleries. Its heart is the single malt Strathisla. If you want a single malt from the same house, look at Strathisla itself or The Glenlivet, also owned by Pernod Ricard.
Chivas Regal or Johnnie Walker?
Both are 40% Scotch blends. Chivas (Speyside) is smoother, sweeter and fruitier, without smoke. Johnnie Walker Black Label has a light smoky note and is somewhat drier and fuller-bodied. If you like mild and rounded, choose Chivas; if you like a little smoke, choose Johnnie Walker.
How do you store an opened bottle of Chivas?
Upright, tightly sealed, in a cool, dark place. Whisky does not continue to mature in the bottle and does not spoil, but a bottle that is less than a quarter full slowly loses aroma through exposure to air. Drink it within a year.
