What is Villa Massa?

Limoncello as they make it in Sorrento

Villa Massa is a limoncello from the Sorrento Peninsula, south of Naples. The Massa family makes the liqueur according to a family recipe from 1890: the peel of Sorrento lemons, known for their thick, oil-rich peel, is infused in alcohol until all the lemon oil has been extracted, after which sugar water is added. No colouring, no flavouring: the yellow colour comes purely from the peel. The brand was founded in 1991 and now belongs to the Spanish Zamora Company, also the maker of Licor 43.

At 30% alcohol, Villa Massa is stronger than many supermarket limoncellos, but its sweetness and fresh lemon make it smooth. In Italy, it is drunk ice-cold as a digestif; in the Netherlands, the Limoncello Spritz has become at least as popular in recent years. In addition to limoncello, Villa Massa also makes an amaretto from Sicilian almonds.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Villa Massa

Limoncello is served ice-cold. Put the bottle in the freezer: because of the sugar and alcohol, it will not freeze, but becomes deliciously syrupy.

Ice-cold neat, after a meal

Pour 3 to 4 cl from the freezer into a small, chilled liqueur glass. Sip slowly as a digestif. That’s how they do it in Sorrento.

Limoncello Spritz

50 ml limoncello, 75 ml prosecco, and a splash of soda in a wine glass filled with ice, with a lemon slice and a sprig of mint. Fresher and lighter than an Aperol Spritz.

Limoncello tonic

50 ml limoncello with 150 ml tonic in a highball glass filled with ice and a lemon slice. Dry, bittersweet, and surprisingly good as an aperitif.

What percentage of alcohol is in Villa Massa?
Villa Massa Limoncello contains 30% alcohol, just like Villa Massa Amaretto. That is on the stronger side for a limoncello; many other brands are between 25 and 30%.
Should limoncello be kept in the freezer?
Yes, that is the best place. The sugar and 30% alcohol prevent the liqueur from freezing, while making it thick and syrupy, exactly as it is served in Italy. Put the glasses in the freezer for a while too.
What is Villa Massa made from?
It is made from the peel of lemons from Sorrento, the area near Naples known for its large, thick-skinned lemons. The peels are infused in alcohol, after which sugar and water are added. It contains no coloring: the yellow comes from the peel.
What is the difference compared with other limoncellos?
Villa Massa uses only Sorrento lemons and an old family recipe, and at 30% ABV, it is slightly stronger than many cheaper limoncellos. The result has a more intense lemon flavor and is less candy-sweet. It is one of the most frequently served limoncellos in Italian restaurants.
How do you make a Limoncello Spritz?
Fill a wine glass with ice, add 50 ml of limoncello and 75 ml of prosecco, then top up with a splash of soda water. Garnish with a lemon slice and a sprig of mint. The full recipe is on our Limoncello Spritz page.
How long does an opened bottle of limoncello last?
In the freezer or refrigerator, limoncello stays good for a year or longer. The lemon flavor gradually becomes flatter over time, but the liqueur does not spoil.
