What is The Macallan Sherry Oak 12 Years?

Twelve years on nothing but sherry wood

Sherry Oak 12 Years is the whisky that made Macallan’s name. The difference from the more widely sold Double Cask 12 lies entirely in the wood: while Double Cask also uses American oak, Sherry Oak is matured exclusively in sherry-seasoned European oak casks from Jerez. This gives a rich, intense malt with a deep golden color.

The result is fuller and more classic. The vanilla and honey that take center stage in the Double Cask give way here to dried fruit, spices and oak. Both are twelve years old and both are 40%; anyone who finds the Double Cask too soft will find more depth in the Sherry Oak.

Everything about The Macallan →
What percentage of alcohol is in Macallan Sherry Oak 12?
The Macallan Sherry Oak 12 Years contains 40% alcohol, as does the Double Cask 12. The 15- and 18-year-old versions are 43%.
What is the difference between Macallan Sherry Oak 12 and Double Cask 12?
Sherry Oak is matured exclusively in European oak sherry casks from Jerez, while Double Cask combines European and American oak. Sherry Oak is therefore fuller and darker, with dried fruit and spices; Double Cask is smoother, with more vanilla and honey.
Is Macallan Sherry Oak 12 smoky?
No. The flavor comes from the sherry casks, not from peat. You taste dried fruit, spices and oak, not smoke.
What is the best way to drink Macallan Sherry Oak 12?
Neat, at room temperature, in a tulip-shaped tasting glass. A few drops of water open up the aromas. It also works excellently in a Manhattan or Boulevardier.
Where is Macallan Sherry Oak 12 made?
In Craigellachie in Speyside, Scotland. The Macallan was founded there in 1824 and was one of the first distilleries to receive an official license. Only the casks come from Spain: from Jerez, where they are first filled with sherry.
