What is Stroh?

The spiced rum from the Alps you know from the ski hut

Stroh is an Austrian spiced rum founded in 1832 by Sebastian Stroh in Klagenfurt. It is a so-called Inländer-Rum: a rum made in Austria and flavored with a secret blend of herbs and aromas. The result is dark brown, sweet and full of vanilla, caramel and orange.

Stroh became famous for Stroh 80: an 80% alcohol rum found in Jagertee and punch at ski huts and used in Austrian kitchens for strudel and Rumtopf. For those who simply want to drink it, there is the milder Stroh 38, the version most commonly seen in the Netherlands.

What percentage of alcohol is in Stroh?
That depends on the bottle: Stroh 38 contains 38% alcohol, Stroh 40 40%, Stroh 60 60% and Stroh 80 a full 80%. Stroh Jagertee, the ready-made tea concentrate, contains 40%.
Can you drink Stroh 80 neat?
You can, but it is not intended for that: 80% alcohol is too strong to enjoy and numbs your taste buds. Stroh 80 is made to be diluted in Jagertee or punch and for baking. If you want to drink Stroh neat, choose the 38.
What is Jagertee?
A warm drink from the Alps made with black tea, rum, sugar and spices, popular during après-ski. You can make it yourself with strong tea and a splash of Stroh, or use Stroh Jagertee, a ready-made concentrate that you only need to dilute with hot water.
Is Stroh real rum?
Stroh is an Austrian Inländer rum: a spiced rum made in Austria and flavored with herbs and aromas. As a result, it tastes sweeter and more spiced than a Caribbean rum such as Bacardi and is mainly used for mixing and cooking.
What do you use Stroh for in the kitchen?
For anything that calls for rum: apple strudel, Rumtopf, punch, rum raisins, tiramisu and flambéing. Due to the high alcohol content of Stroh 80, you only need a small splash; the flavor also remains intact after baking.
How long does an opened bottle of Stroh last?
Years. Due to its high alcohol content, Stroh does not spoil. Store the bottle upright, tightly sealed and out of direct sunlight, and keep the 80 away from open flames.
