What is Stroh 38?

Stroh at drinking strength

Stroh 38 is the mildest rum from Sebastian Stroh of Klagenfurt, the Austrian house that has made spiced Inländer rum since 1832. Its flavor is characterized by Austrian spices, with aromas of oak, vanilla, and orange. On the palate, you can taste the oak in which the rum was aged.

The difference from the familiar Stroh 80 lies in the alcohol content. While the 80 is too strong to drink neat and mainly ends up in Jagertee, punch, and the kitchen, the 38 is made to be poured straight into a glass. The producer recommends hot chocolate itself, and it is also excellent with cola or over ice.

How to drink it

How to drink Stroh 38

Warm in winter, cold with cola in summer. The 38 can do both.

In hot chocolate

Heat 200 ml hot chocolate, pour it into a handled glass, and stir in 30 ml Stroh 38. Top it with a dollop of whipped cream. This is how the producer recommends it.

Handled glasses →

Stroh cola

50 ml Stroh 38 with 150 ml cola in a highball glass full of ice, with an orange wedge instead of lemon. It suits the orange notes better.

To the Cuba Libre →

Straight over ice

Pour 4 cl Stroh 38 over a large ice cube in a tumbler. The cold makes it less sweet and brings the oak and spices to the fore.

Everything about Stroh →
What percentage of alcohol does Stroh 38 contain?
Stroh 38 contains 38% alcohol. That is less than half the Stroh 80 and roughly the same as regular rum.
What is the difference between Stroh 38 and Stroh 80?
The taste is the same, but the 80 contains 80% alcohol and is mainly intended for Jagertee, punch and cooking. The 38 is the version you drink neat, with cola or in hot chocolate.
What do you drink Stroh 38 with?
The producer's classic recommendation is hot chocolate. Cola, ginger beer and tea also work well, as does drinking it neat over ice.
Is Stroh 38 real rum?
It is an Austrian Inländer rum: rum made in Austria and flavored with herbs and aromas. As a result, it tastes sweeter and spicier than Caribbean rum.
Can you bake with Stroh 38?
Yes, although you need more of it than the 80. It works perfectly for rum raisins, tiramisu or strudel. The 80 is more suitable for flambéing.
