What is Casamigos?

Started as a house brand, ended in a billion-dollar deal

Casamigos was founded around 2011, when George Clooney and his friend and business partner Rande Gerber were looking for a tequila they could drink neat, without salt and lime. They had a distillery in Jalisco create a recipe and ordered bottles from it for their own use for years. The name means "house of friends", after the two neighboring houses in Mexico where it began.

The tequila officially launched in 2013, and in 2017 Diageo acquired the brand in a deal worth up to one billion dollars. Casamigos is made from 100% blue Weber agave from the Mexican state of Jalisco, with a long fermentation and a smooth, sweet style deliberately created for drinking neat. There is also an espadín agave mezcal from Oaxaca.

What does Casamigos taste like?

Sweet agave, vanilla and a smooth finish

Nose

Agave & vanilla

Sweet cooked agave with vanilla and citrus peel. The Reposado and Añejo also bring caramel and oak.

Palate

Smooth and rounded

Remarkably smooth, with little of the pepperiness tequila can have. Sweet agave takes center stage, with a light citrus note.

Finish

Long and clean

A long, smooth finish without harshness. Exactly what the brand was made for: drinking neat without salt or lime.

Sweet 3/5
Spicy 2/5
Fruity 3/5
Strength 3/5

Flavor profile of Casamigos Blanco. The Añejo scores higher on sweetness and spice; the Mezcal adds a distinct smoky note.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink Casamigos

Casamigos is made to be drunk neat, without salt or lime. In cocktails, the Blanco is the logical choice.

Neat at room temperature

4 cl in a small tasting glass or tequila glass, without salt or lime. Take small sips and let it rest in your mouth for a moment: this is how you taste the sweet agave and vanilla.

Glass: tasting glass →

As a Margarita

50 ml Casamigos Blanco, 25 ml lime juice and 20 ml triple sec shaken and strained into a margarita glass with a salted rim. The smooth agave makes the Margarita rounder than with a sharp tequila.

As a Paloma

50 ml Casamigos Blanco with grapefruit soda, a splash of lime and plenty of ice in a highball glass with a salted rim. More popular in Mexico than the Margarita and much more refreshing.

What percentage of alcohol is in Casamigos?
All Casamigos bottles contain 40% alcohol: the Blanco, the Reposado, the Añejo, and the Mezcal.
Is Casamigos really owned by George Clooney?
Casamigos was founded in 2013 by George Clooney, Rande Gerber, and Mike Meldman, but sold to Diageo in 2017 for an amount that could rise to one billion dollars with bonuses. Clooney remained associated with the brand as an ambassador afterward.
What is the difference between Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo?
It is about the aging. Blanco is unaged and therefore the freshest, Reposado is aged for seven months in American oak and develops caramel and cacao notes, while Añejo is aged for fourteen months, making it darker, rounder, and almost whisky-like.
What is the difference between tequila and mezcal?
Tequila may only be made from blue Weber agave and comes mainly from Jalisco. Mezcal can be made from dozens of agave species and usually comes from Oaxaca. For mezcal, the agaves are cooked in pits with hot volcanic rock, which makes it smoky. Both are agave spirits with their own protected designation of origin.
Should you drink Casamigos with salt and lime?
No. The brand was specifically created to be drunk neat: salt and lime were originally used to mask the harshness of cheap mixto tequila. A 100% agave tequila such as Casamigos does not need that.
Which Casamigos is best to use in a Margarita?
The Blanco. It is fresh and citrusy, allowing the lime to shine. If you want a smoky variation, use the Mezcal, optionally mixed half and half with the Blanco.
