How many cl should a whisky glass be?
For whisky neat, 30 to 35 cl is the most pleasant size. You pour three to four centilitres and keep enough head space for the aroma. If you want to use an ice ball of five centimetres, choose at least 35 cl.
What is the difference between a tumbler and a tasting glass?
A tumbler is wide and heavy and lets the alcohol vapour escape, which makes whisky drink more softly. A tasting glass narrows towards the top and concentrates the aroma instead, which makes it better for telling distillates apart.
Will a large ice ball fit?
That depends on the size. An ice ball of five centimetres fits comfortably from about 35 cl. It will go into a 24 cl tumbler, but then there is hardly any room left to pour properly.
Are whisky glasses dishwasher safe?
Most are, on a short glassware programme. Use little rinse aid, because that is what turns cut glasses matt. A tasting glass you use for nosing is better rinsed with hot water alone and no soap.
Why add water to whisky?
A few drops break the surface tension and release volatile aromas that the alcohol was drowning out. You taste more, not less. Start with two or three drops and build up slowly to taste.
